Recognition Award for Volunteer John McMahon

Powys award shines spotlight on quiet hero making a big difference
We’re delighted to share that John McMahon, LWCT Director and long-serving Community Car Driver, has received a Recognition Award from the High Sheriff of Powys.
John has been volunteering with Llanwrtyd Wells Community Transport since 2017, and his dedication has made a real difference to our passengers and our broader community. Whether driving locally or taking passengers to appointments in London, Birmingham, Cardiff or Swansea, John’s warmth and reliability have earned him many friends along the way.
One of John’s regular contributions is following the Community Bus each week in his own vehicle, ensuring passengers have enough space to bring their shopping home comfortably. It’s this kind of thoughtful support that makes him such a valued part of the LWCT team.
The award was presented, on 23 April 2025, during the launch of the “Volunteering in Powys” initiative, with celebration events held in Brecon and Newtown. Organised by Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations (PAVO) in collaboration with the outgoing High Sheriff, Kathryn Silk, the events recognised the vital contributions of volunteers across the county—from community transport and libraries to mountain rescue and end-of-life care.
Kathryn Silk said:
“Volunteers contribute so much to their communities, and it’s been fantastic to hear how rewarding they find the experience.”
LWCT is proud of John and his commitment to helping others. Congratulations, John—and thank you for everything you do!
Could you help us to help out?
John’s story is a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make. If you’ve ever thought about contributing to the community, now is a great time to get involved. Even if you can only lend a few hours a month or very infrequently, your time and energy can make a significant difference.
Whether you enjoy driving, chatting with passengers and helping them on and off the bus, or helping behind the scenes, there’s a place for you.
We offer:
- Flexible opportunities to fit around your schedule
- Support and training to help you feel confident
- No pressure! You’re free to say no to anything at any time
As Clair Swales, PAVO CEO, said:
“These events were not just a celebration, but a powerful reminder of the heart and soul that volunteers bring to our communities.”
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
